The former princely state of Bikaner, established in 1488 on the western edge of Rajasthan’s majestic Thar Desert, is steeped in history and grandeur. Over the centuries, its courageous kings fought valiantly in numerous battles, constructing opulent fort-palaces that served as both luxurious residences and formidable defenses while also nurturing the arts. Under the visionary rule of Maharaja Ganga Singh Ji (1881–1942), Bikaner entered its Golden Age, marked by progressive governance and cultural flourishing. His reign was supported by his cousin, Prime Minister Maharaj Bhairon Singh Ji, named after the revered deity Bhairon, a manifestation of Lord Shiva. In recognition of his exemplary service to the Crown, Lord Hardinge, then Governor of India, honored Bhairon Singh Ji with the prestigious title of K.C.S.I. (Knight Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India) in 1916. The Bhairon Vilas Haveli, established in 1872, served as the personal residence of Maharaj Bhairon Singh Ji and was named not only after its distinguished builder but also after the sacred statue of God Bhairon discovered during the excavation for its foundation—considered an auspicious omen of good fortune. This rich tapestry of history makes Bikaner a captivating destination for travelers seeking to explore its royal heritage.
